Did you ever think or realize that initially all martial arts styles were originally weapon-based styles.
That’s a tough one to believe isn’t it, but if you think about it, you just might find yourself agreeing and even being surprised that you didn’t realize it yourself.
Oh I know the vast majority of you martial art practitioners out there reading this will probably instantly disagree, but remember I aked you to think about the above statement first, before you agree or disagree, so think about it.
When most people, whether they are martial art practitioners or just simply enjoy watching martial art films, performances and demonstrations or are physically involved in the practice of learning one or more of countless martial art styles.
I for one think the martial art is amazing, because in today’s world you can actually see versions and segments of countless martial art styles exibited in just about everything from TV shows and commercials to blockbuster action films, but you know what, there is far more fiction & fantasy in all of that than there is reality; however its all fairly entertaining, especially if you don’t know the difference between creative fantasy and factual reality.
There are many items still in existance today that are considered to be ancient hand held martial art weapons and I have to admit the vast majority of them are real and very facinating to study, learn how to manipulate and utilize. Remember my question at the beginning of this article?
Did you ever think or realize that initially all martial arts styles were originally weapon-based styles? That was my original question, now wheather you agree or disagree I will try to assist you in seeing, understanding and even agreeing with that statement, at least to varying degrees, possibly.
First off allow me to make a really bold statement here in saying that virtually everything can be utilized as a weapon and that simple statement is fairly easy to prove and you can even prove it to yourself with a little creative effort, but yes of course there possibly are some things that realistically cannot be used, maybe.
I mentioned weapon-based arts and ancient hand-held weapons, and there is a significant difference there, but please allow me to keep this article limited somewhat or it will rather quickly turn into more of a book than a short article.
In recent more modern times the human hand was actually “a weapon, even a deadly weapon, especially where professional boxers were concerned, as they had developed accuracy and force that could easily kill.
Way back long before recorded history, the ancient discovers, developers and preservers of the original survival skills had no immediate weapons available other than their hands and it was their hands that were the bases that all martial art were formed and developed from, as their hands really were formitable weapons.
Now with that said, I will try to visually and descriptively show you how the human hand eventually became the deadly weapon in ancient times and that it certainly is still just as deadly today.
The easy and simplest way would be to say that pretty much anything held in the human hand can concievably be utilized as a weapon, even a DEADLY WEAPON.
I mentioned THE EMPTY HUMAN HAND being the first DEADLY WEAPON so watch closely as THE HAND IS QUICKER THAN THE EYE!
Not only is THE HUMAN HAND DEADLY, but so are the various parts of the hand deadly, such as the FINGERS, the THUMB, the PALM and the BASE of the PALM and likewise the SIDE of the hand is also very DEADLY.
The FINGER TIPS, the KNUCKLES, the BACK of the hand and even the WRIST and lets not forget the THUMB SIDE of the hand also being very DEADLY.
Now do you believe that THE HUMAN HAND actually really was the very first conceivably DEADLY WEAPON.
Ok wheather you agree or not, it was, then of course comes the forearms, “ELBOWS” and KNEES and the HEAD, plus quite possibly THE WHOLE HUMAN BODY can be considered a very DEADLY WEAPON, especially your very own “BRAIN”!
Hopefully you are all staying with me on this, but just in case you might still be having just a little problem, please allow me to introduce to you all my main teacher, mentor and very dear friend, the world renowned DAN INOSANTO, whos best friend and training partner for the last ten years of his far too short ASTONISHING LIFE, THE GREAT, SIMPLY AMAZING BRUCE LEE and his personal fighting style with Bruce and Dan working together creating, “JEET KUNE DO”, roughly translated meaning “THE WAY OF THE INTERCEPTING FIST”.
I would imagine that at least most martial art practitioners have at least heard of BRUCE LEE and his personal fighting style of JEET KUNE DO and possibly most people would also relate this to one of Bruce’s teacher’s incredible art of Wing Chung and THE GREAT IP MAN.
Of course Bruce was incredibly “FAST” with his HANDS as well as his FEET and likewise was THE GREAT IP MAN and the vast majority of martial art practitioners consider JEET KUNE DO and WING CHUNG empty hand martial art forms, however they actually are WEAPONS BASED ARTS.
Of course I could be simply playing with words here, but remember earlier in this article my mentioning that THE HUMAN HAND was actually the very first WEAPON?
Let me take that a little farther and even more discriptively by saying that these EMPTY HAND art forms just like BOXING all are also DEADLY BLADED WEAPON ARTS, utilizing EXACTLY the very same motion or movement.
Yes that is correct and to be very honest about this all martial art styles can easily be transformed into EXTREMELY DEADLY BLADED ART FORMS with having to CHANGE or ALTER extremely little other than YOUR mental perception, as virtually every movement in every martial art style globally can be performed and utilized with a DEADLY BLADE!
Isn’t that really “AMAZING, SIMPLY AMAZING?
I think we have found maybe just a little simplicity in the complexity of all martial art styles all down through hundreds, if not thousands or even possibly millions of years, now that really would be “AMAZING, SIMPLY AMAZING” wouldn’t it!
I use to tell my students that “THE BLADE FOLLOWS THE HAND” and that is so profoundly true, regardless of which position you hold the blade in. Very much like “THE BODY FOLLOWS THE HEAD”, as when the head is moved, the body physically must follow.
Just a few years ago, shortly before I moved to a different country, one of my long time students Master Cory Ballenger held a farewell seminar for me and he called that seminar very approperately “THE FINAL CUT” and during that seminar that was very nicely attended by many of my long time students, at some point I used Cory as a demonstrating partner and during that particular demonstration I shared some material with Cory that he had never seen and the results were priceless.
I was able to see from the expression on his face that he had never realized the SIMPLICITY of defending against a blade at extremely close range, even against an opponent who was very well versed in using blades. (that was my personal “GIFT” to him for hosting the seminar and for being such a long time dedicated student)
I simply showed him and everyone else attending BRUCE LEE’S concept of JEET KUNE DO, or THE WAY OF THE INTERCEPTING “KNIFE” and it really is so SIMPLE!
There was another one of my long time students also attending that I hadn’t seen in many years and I was so happy to see how much he had improved over the years as it was amazing, simply amazing to see how much he had evolved.
His name is James Nielson and I always called him JIMMY, because he, like Cory started working with me when he was a very young man and I also used Jimmy as a demonstrating partner during that FINAL CUT seminar too, again sharing with Jimmy BRUCE LEE’S intercepting concept by allowing Jimmy to attack me slicing to my throat with his knife.
All I had to do was to hole my knife at the level of my throat and move my upper body just slightly out of his knife’s reach, automatically cutting his wrist, plus also as Bruce Lee often did, I followed his knife arm back as it retreated, cutting Jimmy’s throat. (that was my personal “GIFT” to Jimmy)
Friends “SIMPLICITY” is the “KEY” to the overwhelming “COMPLEXITY” found woven ever so deeply into the very fabric of the martial art to preserve the endless hiden secrets our ancient forefathers discovered and preserved for us all, so whatever you do, KEEP IT SIMPLE and you too will be “AMAZED, SIMPLY AMAZED!
